India chose a young woman diplomat from its permanent mission to the UN to deliver its first response to Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s speech at the General Assembly that raked up the Kashmir issue.
Eenam Gambhir, the first secretary at the permanent mission who delivered the riposte when India exercised its “right of reply”, is no stranger to Pakistan. Before being posted to New York, she served on the Pakistan desk at the external affairs ministry.
Gambhir’s statement started off by describing Sharif’s speech as a “long tirade” about the situation in Kashmir and called Pakistan a “terrorist state”. It also set the stage for the speech that will be delivered by another woman, external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj, who will speak as India’s representative on September 26.
