Fourteen years after Bandit Queen, Shekhar Kapur is all set to return to Hindi cinema. A source informs us that he will be reviving his dream project Time Machine. The futuristic film was abandoned halfway in 1992 due to lack of finances. Aamir Khan had shot considerably for the film that also featured Rekha, Raveena Tandon and Naseeruddin Shah.
According to our source, Kapur has signed a two-film deal with UTV for Time Machine and Paani. The latter will commence in the second half of this year. UTV officials are tightlipped about the deal.
Siddharth Raj Kapoor, executive vice-president, marketing, communication and syndicate, refused to comment on it. All he would say is, "Being a corporate house, we believe in making announcements. And at the moment, I've no idea what you're talking about."
Interestingly, a couple of months ago, it had been reported that Kapur wanted to revive Time Machine with the original cast. Then, because he needed to focus on other international projects, he decided to hand it over to Aamir Khan to produce.
"But Aamir was busy with Taare Zameen Par. And since a film like Time Machine demanded complete concentration and is a project very close to Shekhar's heart, he's taken it back and is going ahead with it himself," informs the source.
He adds that Khan will no longer be a part of Time Machine since he'll soon resume shooting for the remake of Ghajini, which also features south Indian actress Asin and Jiah Khan. He has also reportedly committed to an English film, Delhi Belly, which he will produce.
Besides, he will also be overseeing his home production Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. Directed by Abbas Tyrewala, the movie marks the launch of his nephew Imran Khan. So the question is: who will be the leading man of Time Machine now?
"Shekhar is keen on casting Ranbir Kapoor but has yet to approach him," reveals our source.
