"It is critical that crimes such as the murder of Nadarajah Raviraj not go unpunished," the US Embassy in Colombo said in a statement.

"The people of Sri Lanka have been unjustly robbed of his energy and talent," the release said.

TNA not to be cowed

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) to which Raviraj belonged said in a statement that his assassination was a "diabolical attempt to suppress a fearless Tamil voice".

"Mr Raviraj's killing is a clear demonstration that evil forces vehemently opposed to a just resolution of the Tamil question are determined to eliminate voices of reason that can clearly espouse the Tamil cause."

"This trend can only result in anarchy but the just Tamil cause will never surrender before the sinister designs of such forces," the TNA's parliamentary group leader R Sampanthan said.
