A nine-year-old girl was strangled to death on Wednesday night and her body was recovered from the bathroom of an unoccupied flat at C Block, IDA colony in Nipaniya area in Indore.
Police sources said victim Vaishnavi Bohare, resident of A Block of the same colony, had gone out to play and went missing around 2:30pm. Initially, her parents thought that she might have gone for the immersion procession along with others. As it got late, they started searching for her and found her lying in the flat.
“Initially a missing complaint had been registered by the police but her parents found her body. Four people have been detained for questioning,” said Khajrana police station in-charge AS Tomar.
Though the post mortem report is yet to be received, police said it is unlikely that the girl had been raped before being murdered. “We did not find any blood, though there were laceration marks on her leg implying that she might have been dragged,” sources said.
Working on two theories to the crime, a police officer said, “One of the theories state that someone familiar to Vaishnavi took her to the spot without facing resistance. Personal enmity with her parents can then trigger the murder.” Police also suspect that the victim stumbled upon illegal activity in the vacant flat, recognised people involved, and was therefore killed.
The area is populated by low income group families. “Unidentified people come here along with girls covering their faces,” said a local resident.
