Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Wednesday arrested the chairperson of Chhabra Municipality in Baran district and her husband, for taking a bribe of Rs 1 lakh -- all currencies in Rs 1,000 denomination.
The central government has abolished 1000-and 500-rupee banknotes in a move to flush out money hidden from the tax man.
The arrested are Pinky Sahu and her husband Jitendra Kumar Sahu. ACB circle inspector Neeraj Kumar said Jitendra had demanded a bribe of Rs 17 lakh from Rajmal Soni to convert his land in Dhanlakshmi Colony in Chhabra into four plots. The accused had already taken Rs 2 lakh in two instalments.
The anti-corruption agency caught Jitendra accepting Rs 1 lakh as the third instalment from the complainant. “Rajmal had complained of the bribe demand a couple of months ago. We verified the complaint and found the involvement of Jitendra’s wife as well. Hence, we have arrested both of them,” said Neeraj Kumar.
Pinky, belonging to the Bharatiya Janata Party, was elected as the chairperson of the Chhabra Municipality on November 2014, in the Other Backward Caste category.
