A day after the Shiv Sena-led Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) rejected a state government proposal to change land use of 33 hectares at Aarey Colony to build a car shed, Yuva Sena chief Aaditya Thackeray reiterated his party’s opposition.
The Thackeray scion tweeted that he supports the need for a Metro rail corridor but it was ridiculous to damage Aarey, one of Mumbai’s few green lungs, for the project.
Hw ridiculous is it to justify damaging a forest by saying public transport will save environment. Damage is same. Alternative is available— Aaditya Thackeray (@AUThackeray) June 8, 2017
“While on one hand, the Centre speaks of the Paris Agreement and our commitment to fighting climate change, we damage Aarey — our local forest. I wonder if our statements on climate change are just for headlines and social media,” Thackeray said.
The Shiv Sena has opposed the plan of setting aside land at Aarey Colony for a Metro car shed for the Colaba-Bandra-Seepz line from the very beginning. The BMC, where the Sena has a majority, has also marked the land as a no-development zone in the draft Development Plan for Mumbai.
