The BJP-led state government has decided to start building two metro lines in the first week of September, bucking the decades-old practice of halting construction during the monsoon.

The reason for this is that the government wants to ensure the two lines are operational by mid-2019, in time for it to showcase them as an achievement in the run-up to elections later that year.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) recently appointed contractors for civil work on Metro 7 (Dahisar East to Andheri East) and Metro 2A (Dahisar to DN Nagar stretch).

“We have to build a metro network spanning over 170 km in Mumbai and surrounding areas. To achieve this goal, we will have to speed up work. So we have asked the contractors of Metro 2A and Metro 7 to start construction in September, which is feasible,” said Pravin Darade, additional commissioner of MMRDA and a secretary in the chief minister’s office.

Other important infrastructure projects such as Metro 3 (Colaba-Bandra-Seepz) and the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link are likely to take off once the monsoon ends. Going by their magnitude, they are not expected to be ready before 2020-21.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, which is executing Metro 2A, has appointed J Kumar to build the elevated corridor and stations. Similarly, MMRDA has awarded contracts to J Kumar, Simplex and NCC for civil work on Metro 7. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has already approved financial assistance for both projects.

Now, MMRDA is in the process of bringing other metro projects such as Metro 4 (Wadala-Thane-Kasarvadavli), Metro 6 (Jogeshwari-Kanjurmarg) and Metro 2A (DN Nagar-Bandra-Mankhurd stretch) to the execution stage. According to officials, MMRDA will start issuing tenders for these lines in the next few months.

goes as per the trend in last few decades, the government authorities have chosen to avoid commencing or carrying out any kind of civil works during monsoon in the city. Now, the BJP-led state government has decided to start construction of two new metro lines in the first week of the September, which means during monsoon. The reason: it wants speedy execution so a few metro lines are operational by mid-2019, which can be shown as achievement of the government when it faces elections in later part of the same year.

Lately, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has ensured appointment of contractors for civil works of Dahisar E- Andheri E Metro 7 and Dahisar- DN Nagar Metro 2A.

“We have to build network of over 170-km metro in Mumbai and surrounding region. In order to achieve the goal, we will have to speed up execution work. So, we have asked the contractors of Metro 2A and Metro 7 to start construction work from September, which is feasible,” said Pravin Darade, who is additional commissioner of MMRDA and secretary at the Chief Minister’s Office.

In addition, other important infrastructure projects such as Colaba- Bandra- Seepz Metro 3, Mumbai Trans Harbour Link are set to take off once monsoon is over. Going by the magnitude and size, these projects are not expected to be ready before 2020-21.
