A biopic on Super 30 founder and mathematician Anand Kumar, whose initiative has helped over 300 students from underprivileged sections successfully chase the big IIT dream, will now be on the silver screen.
Director Vikas Bahl, who got the International Indian Film Academy Award (IIFA), Filmfare Award and National Film Award in 2014 for his film ‘Queen’, will direct the film. The film will be shot extensively in Patna.
The film will be produced by Preeti Sinha, whose films ‘Andaaz apna-apna’ and ‘Shaan’ were very successful at the box office. Sanjeev Dutt of ‘Page 3’, ‘Life in Metro’, “Gangster’, ‘Heropanti’ and ‘Burfi’ fame will do the script writing.
Bahl and Dutt were present at Kumar’s residence on Monday when producer Preeti Sinha and Vinay Sinha signed the contract for the film. Bahl, whose thriller ‘Udta Punjab’ on the growing drug problem in Punjab is set to release later this month, told HT that he was looking forward to the film, which would be entertaining and will have a powerful message.
“I will give it my best shot, as the personality of Kumar has many dimensions and weaving them into a story for the silver screen would be really fascinating. We will decide the star cast when the time comes. The real focus right now in on the script. We would like Anand also to play some part, but he says he can only teach and he would not like to dabble in acting,” he added.
Sinha said the plan for a biopic on Anand Kumar started last year. “We will try to establish the real theme of Super 30 in a way that people would appreciate. There is already huge excitement about it,” he added.
Dutt said he had already started working on the script. “We have to encapsulate everything into three hours. I am already into it,” he added.
The Bollywood team also met the Super 30 students in the hostel, watched them study, had a glimpse of the class engaged by Kumar. “We will come again to get more feel of Super 30 and how the students get inspired. We will deal with a serious subject in an entertaining way to reach out to maximum audience, including foreign countries,” said Dutta.
Earlier, director Anurag Basu and Priyanka Chopra had also talked to Kumar about the biopic, but things could not materialise.
“It is true that talks were on for a biopic on my life for the last few years and some directors and producers talked to me in this regard, but eventually Preeti Sinha, whose popular TV show ‘Dar Sabko Lagta Hai’ is being hosted by Bipasha Basu, got it,” said the mathematician.
