A security guard posted at the HDFC Bank branch in Budhlada town, 20km from district headquarters Mansa, fired at least three gunshots in the air to disperse a crowd gathered to withdraw money on Tuesday morning. This comes as another in a series of violent or potentially violent incidents ever since a cash crunch hit the entire country following demonetisation of the old notes of Rs 500 and 1,000.
According to deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Gurmeet Singh, “the crowd got so impatient that the glass doors of the bank developed cracks”. “Out of fear, the guard fired a gunshot in the air to disperse the crowd. No FIR has been lodged as there was no malicious intent behind the firing,” the DSP added. When told that there were three shots fired, as per a video of the incident by an eyewitness, he said “there may be three; I will check”.
