A constable deputed in the security of outgoing Punjab finance minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa died in an accidental firing when he was cleaning his service weapon at the minister’s official residence in Sector 2 on Sunday.

The deceased, Surjit Kumar, a native of Adampur in Jalandhar district, was in his early forties. The police control room (PCR) was informed after which cops from the Sector-3 police station reached the spot.

The police said after Surjit received a bullet in his head at 12noon, he was rushed to the Government Multi-specialty Hospital (GMSH)-16, where he was declared brought dead.

The body has been kept in the hospital mortuary.

Another Punjab Police constable deputed at the minister’s residence said, “He was leaving for duty at Punjab Bhawan. The minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa came to the residence a few minutes before the incident took place. We were celebrating his (Dhindsa) victory in the Punjab assembly elections. Surjit congratulated the minister for his win.”

Surjit went to the security room and was fixing the magazine when the bullet went off, the policeman said.

“After hearing the sound of bullet, we rushed to the security box and found Surjit in a pool of blood. He was already dead. He was deputed with the minister for five years,” he said.
