Fulfilling decade-old demand, Gandhi gifts fire tender to Nabha civic body

Dr Dharamvira Gandhi, member of Parliament from Patiala, handed over the much-awaited fire tender to the Nabha municipality as a Diwali gift on Saturday. The vehicle, the demand for which had been pending for a decade, finally reached the town with three staff members on deputation from Samana. Last year, Dr Gandhi had granted the Nabha municipality Rs 24 lakh for the fire brigade, which was earlier called from Gobindgarh or Patiala in case of a fire accident.

Ever since the establishment of the LPG bottling plant in 2000 on the border of the town, the demand for a fire brigade had remained high here.

A fire broke out in the Government Ripudaman College about ten years ago, after which the people raised the demand for a fire brigade with the then MLA Randeep Singh with great intensity. The MLA had put forward the demand in the Vidhan Sabha, which was promised by chief minister Prakash Singh Badal in the previous term.

Finally, the fire brigade has been arranged from the MPLAD funds, which is to be run by the municipalities of Nabha and Bhadson, contributing in the 70:30 ratio in the operational cost. However, the recruitment of the staff and the construction of a building of the fire station are still pending. Meanwhile, the fire brigade will be stationed at the municipality office complex.

Three employees have been deputed from Samana to operate the vehicle. “Our major focus was that the fire brigade must be present in the city before Diwali,” said Jashanpreet Kaur, newly transferred SDM to Nabha. “I am going to fast track the recruitment and construction of building also,” she added.

“I pray that there is no mishappening requiring the fire brigade. Yet, the service towards fulfilment of the demand of Nabha brings pleasure to me,” said Dr Gandhi.
