In a suspected case of honour killing, a 17-year-old youth, resident of Dyal Rajputan village, 16 km from here, was found murdered on Monday.

Avtar Singh, a student of Class 11 at the government high school, Shahbazpur, had going missing since the night of January 9 and his body was found under a heap of straw on the bank of a canal, 4 km from nearby Kuharka village.

Police said Avtar was in a relationship with classmate Sukhwinder Kaur of Kuharka village. His father Gian Singh also confirmed this.

On Gian Singh’s complaint, a case has been registered against Sukhwinder, her father Karaj Singh and brother Gurdev Singh under Sections 302, 201 and 34 of the IPC at Sadar police station. The three are at large and the police are looking for them.

According to investigation, the girl had invited Avtar to her house on January 9. Around 8 pm, Avtar went to her village after telling his parents that he, along with friends, was going to a marriage. His friends confirmed that Avtar went to Sukhwinder’s house.

It is suspected that her family knew about this and they murdered him. The body, which was without the legs, was partially burnt. When the police found the body, stray dogs were preying on it.

Station house officer Baljit Singh said they were investigating the matter.
