The Punjab Police on Wednesday launched a special drive to dispose of narcotics recovered from across the state in the past few years.
On the first day of the statewide operation, 4,000-kg poppy husk and 5-kg heroin were destroyed, said a press release. Over 300-kg smack, 20-kg ganja, 10-kg charas and 60,000 pills and capsules were also disposed of at various government and private incinerators on Wednesday, it said.
The drive is likely to last a few days and is being monitored by the drug disposal committee of the Punjab Police. Drugs were burnt at the government incinerators in Mansa and Kapurthala and private incinerators in SAS Nagar, Dera Bassi, Ludhiana and Amritsar. The process was conducted in the presence of additional director general of police (ADGP)- and inspector general of police (IGP)-level officers.
