It was scene straight out of a Bollywood movie when a woman gatecrashed the venue of a marriage function and thrashed the groom, claiming to be his first wife.
The groom, Vishal Kumar Sonu (42) was beaten up in the middle of the road outside the wedding venue, a restaurant on Malhar Road, by Rakhi and her family members. Rakhi claimed Sonu was her husband and was solemnising his second marriage to a woman 18 years younger to him without divorcing her.
Police reached the spot and took the groom and his relatives to the Sarabha Nagar police station. Sonu, however, said that he had divorced his first wife and had documents to prove it.
A shervani-clad Sonu was with guests at the restaurant when Rakhi stormed in and started arguing with him. When Sonu said he didn’t know her, Rakhi and her family members began assaulting him. Though he tried to flee, Sonu couldn’t manage to get away. Rakhi and her relatives didn’t spare the bride either.
As things got out of hand, the restaurant staff had the place vacated.
Rakhi’s brother Pawan Kumar said Sonu married his sister 14 years ago and that the couple have a 13-year-old son. When their relationship had strained, Rakhi started living with her parents. He further accused Sonu of physically abusing his sister over money as he was unemployed.
“We took Rakhi back to our home and set a condition before Sonu that they will send her back only after he will start earning. Sonu agreed to this and used to visit Rakhi often. We never expected that he will solemnise a second marriage. We came to know about his marriage two days ago, when someone showed us the wedding invitation,” Kumar said.
Sarabha Nagar SHO sub-inspector Mohan Lal said investigations were on and a report would be prepared and then sent to a court for further action.
Ritu’s family said Sonu had told them that he was married and had been with his wife for seven years, but had later divorced her. They said he even showed them documents as proof of that.
The restaurant staff said Sonu had booked the hall for a birthday party. However, the photographer who was hired for the event told police that he was hired to record a wedding anniversary function.
