The show curated by Jasmine Shah Varma comprises Mendes’ 22-artworks. Its title, Prelude to an Overture, is derived from the metaphors for beginnings. It also has an intimate association with her first name ‘Sonatina’ — a musical subtext of sonata.

Originally from Goa, the 25-year-old artist moved to Baroda to study art at the M S University. Mentored by the highly regarded artist, Rekha Rodwittiya, Mendes developed her own art language. She is influenced by everyday experiences, personal histories and the perspectives of others.

Several encounters say so much and yet are overlooked, she states. Starting point For the young artist, photography is the starting point for most of her works which are oils on canvas. She elaborates, “Subtlety and detail have become the points of tension within my works. I hope to intensify this idiom.”

Next, Mendes’ work will be part of a group art exhibition being organised to raise funds for those affected by the terror attacks in the city.
