Poetry is boring — NOT. At least not in Delhi, that’s preparing to celebrate World Poetry Day on March 21 in full spirit, and with a socially-relevant cause that everyone’s welcome to be part of.The Delhi University chapter of AISEC, which is the world’s largest student organisation, is hosting a ‘Poetry against Caste’ evening at travel cafe Kunzum on Tuesday.

It’s the conclusion to an open contest that aims to reward the best original poem against the prevailing caste system in India, and both participants and non-participating poetry lovers can come over at the event to recite, engage in informal discussions and watch short poemfilms. “Since the aim of our initiative 'Caste Away' is to spread awareness about caste discrimination, we thought it would be great to host an event that tries to achieve this in a creative manner. Our poetry night gives people the opportunity to share their thoughts and talents in an informal and interactive setting,” say organisers Anke Mellema and Eva Mulder.

Apart from a fun-filled, active poetry jam with music and chats thrown in, the event will also see an exhibition of poetry adapted to usable, upcycled visual art, by Kavi, The Poetry-Art Project. “We go by the thought that something as beautiful as poetry deserves to be seen and realised more in our day-to-day lives in tangible forms,” says a member of the collective. The host adda is as excited. “We’re always looking to provide a platform to theatre, independent film and new-age poetry,” says Apurbo Banerjee, GM, Kunzum.
