Dalit farmers may fail to benefit from agricultural sops announced by govt

In an effort to relieve farmers’ economic distress, the Centre included in the Union Budget an increase in the minimum support price (MSP) for monsoon crops and pledged Rs 500 crore to Operation Greens, a programme to help growers of tomatoes, onions, and potatoes.

Assembly elections: Richer, educated candidates fared well in the 5 states

Across 689 constituencies in the assembly elections in Goa, Manipur, Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh, the wealthiest candidate won 33.5% of the time, compared to just 24.6% for the second wealthiest candidate and 17% for the third wealthiest.

Experts feel voters may also be more attracted to wealthy candidates because they are seen as being better able to grease the wheels of local bureaucracies.(HT File)

The American state of Kansas — where 32-year-old Srinavas Kuchibhotla was shot to death in a bar Wednesday — is not particularly prone to hate crimes, nor is it home to a disproportionate amount of Indians.
