The Friday’s incident comes barely a week after a 17-year-old girl was stabbed to death by her father and uncle in honour killing in Gwalior’s Hazira area

Upama Dhakad, who was attacked by her brother Gajendra, was rushed to the Kamla Raja Hospital (KRH) in a critical condition.

Gwalior additional superintendent of police Kumar Prateek said a case of attempt to murder and crime with common intent has been registered against Gajendra, a resident of Shivpuri district, and an unidentified aide.

Investigation revealed that Upama had married Gwalior resident Yashwant Rao Bhonsle last year without the consent of her family.

On Friday evening, Upama received a call from younger sister Reema informing her that one of their brothers was hospitalised at the nursing home in Kirar Colony. An unsuspecting Upama rushed to the nursing home with her brother-in-law as her husband was not at home.

Gajendra and his aide pounced on Upama once she reached the nursing home. Gajendra stabbed Upama while his aide overpowered her brother-in-law. The attackers then fled from the spot.

Police suspect that the attackers wanted to eliminate Upama and Yashwant but the plan went awry as she arrived at the nursing home with brother-in-law.

Earlier, on May 13, a 17-year-old girl was stabbed to death by uncle and father at a shelter home in Hazira area over her love affair with a distant relative. The duo was arrested on Thursday.
