No ‘sweet’ Diwali for diabetics in Bhopal

It is that time of year when sweets become an integral part of festivities. For diabetic patients in Bhopal, Diwali is a bittersweet experience. Limited options means they shell out more to buy sugar-free or sugarless sweets.

It is that time of year when sweets become an integral part of festivities. For diabetic patients in Bhopal, Diwali is a bittersweet experience. Limited options means they shell out more to buy sugar-free or sugarless sweets.

“We have about six varieties of sweets in the price range from Rs 1,100 -1,200 per kg for the diabetics. We seldom introduce any variety because the demand of these sweets is almost stable and increases only about 2-3% every Diwali,” a salesman at Manohar Sweets said, adding they offer Khajur Pak, Mewa Bite, Choco Bite, Dry Fruit Roll, Sohan Papdi and Anjeer Delight.

“These sweets account only 5% of the total sales, which itself answers why no new variety is added.”

Sachin Ratra of Gagar Sweets said most of these sweets are made ofdry fruits. “We mainly use dry fruits to make Anjeer Sugarfree, Anjeer Katli and Kaju Khajur without using any substitute of sugar to keep their natural sweetness intact. The dry fruits are both healthy and tasty, and have a greater shelf life than normal sweets,” he said. “Our customers are loyal and they generally don’t demand any new variety.”

Vinamra Agrawal, owner of Arya Bhavan, said the sweets meant for diabetics are also bought by health conscious customers. “We use honey as a sweetner in making some of our sweets meant for diabetics.”

A diabetic, SL Khanwalkar said there are not many options in the market and those available are not up to the mark. “The varieties should be increased by the sweet shops. Due to limited options, we are forced to choose buy from a selected range which are not often to our liking,” said Khanwalkar.

“Because of the limited options, I prefer the delicacies prepared in home which I consider better than the sweet available in the market.”

Dr Manoj Sharma, a city-based endocrinologist, said sugar-free sweets or sugarless sweets are safe for consumption as they are made with low-calorie or zero calorie sweeteners. “Diabetics should enjoy the festival by having sweets in limited quantity, and always believe that they are not living for diabetes but living with diabetes,” he said.
