Shankaracharya Swaroopanand Saraswati of Dwarka Peeth on Tuesday questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on building toilets under Clean India (Swachh Bharat) Mission at a time when the country was facing drought and large number of people were not getting drinking water. He said instead of focusing on building toilets, Modi government should first ensure people have drinking water.
Addressing a press conference in Bhopal before heading to Simhastha in Ujjain, Swaroopanand said: “We are not providing drinking water to people, but constructing toilets. What is this….why go on building toilets when people don’t have drinking water?” he asked.
“What about dogs, will the government also construct toilets for them? They will keep defecating in the streets…We have to focus on drinking water first.”
Shankaracharya also questioned Amit Shah’s participation in a May 11 function at Simhastha where Dalit Sadhus would be felicitated. “Once RSS sarsanghchalak MS Golwalkar invited Mahatma Gandhi to a function. Gandhi asked him how many Harijans were there in the gathering. Golwalkar told him that for RSS all Hindus were same, they didn’t differentiate whether someone was a tribal or a Dalit. So why such a separate function for Dalits now in Ujjain?” he said.
Shankaracharya appreciates HC order scrapping reservations in promotion
Appreciating the high court’s recent order scrapping reservations in promotion, Shankaracharya said government should make downtrodden and backward communities competent and strong so that they can stand on their own in various competitive tests. “Otherwise you will have doctors who continue to leave scissors in abdomens during surgery,” he said.
Shankaracharya said development in the country should also ensure development of people. “We have ended up polluting food, which is laced with pesticides; we drink polluted water, our wells are drying up. There is no space for morality, patriotism, traditional values in the syllabi of schools and colleges. Our youth are getting addicted to different drugs. This needs to change.”
”Who will implement liquor ban?”
Asked whether liquor should be banned in Madhya Pradesh, Shankaracharya said: “Who will implement it? The cop who has to also takes liquor. But if it is banned, it will be a good thing. I have asked my female disciples to raise awareness against liquor by going from house to house,” he said.
Shankaracharya reiterated that Hindu sanatan dharma was being polluted by devotees of Sai Baba, adding, “What Aurangzeb couldn’t do, is being done by Sai devotees”
