Pran played many roles in his long and distinguished film career.
He started out in Bollywood with Yamla Jay (1940).
One of his iconic roles was Malang Chacha in the Manoj Kumar, Asha Parekh-starrer Upkar (1967).
He went on to essay other popular characters such as Sher Khan in Zanjeer (1973), JJ in Don (1978) and Gajendra in Ram Aur Shyam (1967).
Earlier this year, Pran was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke award, in the same month that marked the centenary of Indian cinema.
