Anurag Kashyap does not like the media interfering in his daughter’s life
The filmmaker says that his daughter Aaliyah “gets angry” for not being able to have “a normal life,” as a kid. He also talks about how “getting good funds” for films has been a struggle for him.
Even though film-maker Anurag Kashyap is often talked about for his movies, his personal life has also made news on several occasions — whether be it for his divorce with actor Kalki Koechlin, or for his recent rumoured link-up with 22-year-old Shubhra Shetty, an assistant director.

However, Anurag says speculating about his personal life “should not be anybody’s business”. “Whenever I have been sure about something, it’s been out there. I have always said what I wanted to say. Even when I was breaking up [with Kalki], I was open about it. But speculation destroys a lot of things,” he says.

The film-maker also adds that he “doesn’t like it when the media interferes” in his daughter Aaliyah’s (top right) life. He says, “She gets angry. She asks me, ‘Why can’t I live a normal life? Why should I have to pay the price for being your daughter?’”

Over the years, Anurag has made several critically acclaimed small-budget films such as Ugly (2014) and Raman Raghav 2.0. Ask him if he feels compelled to make these movies because they are more relatable, and he says, “I don’t go by people’s expectations. I do what I believe in. I think it depends on which projects get funded. Getting good funds for my projects has been a struggle each time. But I’m used to it. I have become thick-skinned. If you are adamant about what you want to make, you’ll have to work hard to get funds for it,” he says.
