As Kangana Ranaut makes her Cannes debut, this is what she has to say on gender equality in films

Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut, who is gearing up for the release of her period film Manikarnika, made her debut at the Cannes Film Festival Wednesday and was at her stunning best in a black Sabyasachi sari. Speaking at the Indian Pavillion at the 71st edition of the festival, where she had a discussion with Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chairman Prasoon Joshi on women in Indian films, Kangana said the times have changed and gender bias is not the norm anymore in the film industry.
Asked if she is an exception, Kangana said, “I am not an exception. With the modernisation and the way the world has changed...the difference between men and women have changed. There is a certain equality that has come about in he system. People now question if actor and actresses put in the same effort, why can’t they be treated as equals?”
She also talked about regional cinema: “We have four regional films that are being screened here. It is very endearing that our regional films - Bengali, Malayalam, Punjabi, Assamese - are getting such a platform and will be showcased here. Someone made a film for the first time in Lakshwadeep and it is getting such a grand platform as Cannes! The fact that filmmakers are now getting such wide platforms is great.”
Pictures from her first Cannes appearance were also shared online. The Simran star wore a Sabyasachi black sari and paired it with minimal jewellery. Kangana, who is at the Cannes Film Festival on behalf of Grey Goose India, will attend the festival for three days and will walk the red carpet on May 10.
Kangana, who is attending Cannes in association with a liquor brand, had earlier told IANS, “It is overwhelming to witness the recognition and appreciation for Indian cinema at international platforms like Cannes.”
Deepika Padukone, Huma Qureshi and Sonam Kapoor will also be at Cannes, along with Pakistani actor Mahira Khan.
On the work front, Kangana was last seen in Hansal Mehta’s Simran and is currently working on Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi.
