Bollywood actor and Amitabh Bachchan’s wife Jaya Bhaduri Bachchan turns 67 on Saturday. Jaya, who made her acting debut with Satyajit Ray’s Mahanagar in 1963, took a long break after her marriage to Big B.
The Padma Shri (1992) winner played he main lead for the first time in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Guddi (1971). She has six Filmfare Awards (three for Best Actress and three for Best Supporting Actress), apart from the Lifetime Achievement award she was given in 2007. She essayed all kinds of roles but is mostly remembered for the chirpy, bubbly and girl-next-door kind of characters she played. Here, we take a look at films where she played the young, happy-go-lucky and innocent girl.
1. Guddi (1971)
The star-struck school kid, Guddi (played by Jaya) fails to distinguish between the onscreen image and the real life prsonality of her favourite actor Dharmendra (played by Dharmendra himself). From the innocent eyes to the mannerisms of an awe-struck kid, Jaya got all the details just right in the film.
2. Bawarchi (1972)
Starring along side Rajesh Khanna, Jaya played the happy soul in a family full of frustration in this Hrishikesh Mukherjee film. Jaya infused life into the character of Krishna who was mistreated by everyone in the family but was never rude to them.
3. Parichay (1972)
Gulzar’s film showed Jaya as the eldest of kids in a house where the parents are no more but the grandpa takes care of them all. However, there are misunderstandings between the kids and their guardian. Jaya perfectly portrays the leader of a kids’ gang who is loving and caring but also goes to all lengths when she needs to protect her loved ones. We also saw her naughty side in the movie that also starred Jeetendra.
Jaya played the titular role in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s film where the protagonist is suffering from cancer and knows that her days are numbered. However, the young girl is so full of lifem she ensures noone is sad around her always spreads love and laughter.
5. Chupke Chupke (1975)
Jaya played the college-going Vasudha beautifully in this multi-starrer directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. She was paired opposite Amitabh in the film that also featured Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore, Asrani and Keshto Mukherjee in pivotal roles. Her biology classes with Amitabh and Corolla-Karela jokes still find audience among Bollywood fans.
