Salman Khan’s bodyguard of 15 years, Shera aka Gurmeet Singh, may be enjoying the limelight after Khan decided to don a similar role in his latest movie, but he has not forgotten his duty. “I will not think even once before taking every bullet fired at Salman, if ever. I can die for him ... I will never let him down!” says the 45-year-old.
Ask him how challenging his task is, given that Salman has a huge fan following, and he says, “It’s not at all easy to be a hero’s bodyguard, and it becomes more challenging if the hero is Salman Khan. I always need to make sure that Bhai is safe and nobody disturbs him.”
What makes it tougher is that Sallu doesn’t want any of his fans hurt even in the slightest. “I have seen his fans ready to do anything for him. They just want to touch him … feel him. But, whenever Bhai is out into the crowd, he tells me, ‘Do what you have to but make sure that none of my fans ever gets hurt’. I have to properly sit and plan his security whenever he goes for promotions. Such is his aura.”
He adds that Khan is hardly the angry man he is made out to be. “Unhe kabhi gussa nahi aata (He never gets angry). As far as I am concerned, Salman Bhai is the sweetest man. He is boss number one, maalik number one aur human number 1!”
In the movie, Bodyguard, also starring Kareena Kapoor, Sallu is seen endorsing the logo of Shera’s real-life security agency, which he opted for despite being offered Rs 7cr to endorse another firm. Shera, too, will be seen in a cameo in the film, and experience he describes as “awesome” even though he was nervous. “I have shot the title song of the film with Bhai and Katrina (Kaif). As it was the first time that I was in front of the camera, I was quite nervous. Par bhai ne sab comfortable kar diya. He showed me the dance steps, which I rehearsed several times.”
