Before the release of Simran ends the latest set of controversies, here is looking at who among the leading actresses today rule Bollywood box office.

Beyond Hrithik Roshan and Aditya Pancholi, beyond the narrative of feminism, the current discussion brought about by Kangana Ranaut’s fiery interviews is regarding the space the Simran female actor inhabits in Bollywood today. Can she be a part of the filmmaking process, like what a lot of leading actors do without raising an eyebrow? Can she demand a certain money even if her last film failed?

Her answers -- defined as both brave and brazen depending on who you are listening to -- take on the star system and everything that Bollywood holds dear: “The industry isn’t just made up of four actors who have lasted through the decades. I might not have 30 years behind me. But in my 10 years, I’ve achieved significant milestones to demand a certain fee. Anybody’s film can fail and this year has shown us enough proof of that. So, let’s stop giving the opening [weekend] and closing logic,” she recently told Mid-Day.

Kangana has had a chequered career but she truly came into her own after Queen. Having done 30-odd films in a career spanning over a decade, she has built a space for herself in the top bracket. But does she headline the bracket? If we compare her career graph with her most successful contemporaries -- Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra and Anushka Sharma -- we come up with some interesting answers.

So, instead of putting it in words, we let the numbers do the talking in terms of who is the most successful female actor today. However, there are a few interesting exceptions -- Kangana headlines her own projects while other female actors are part of films which has a ‘more bankable’ lead actor. Having said that, all female actors have done some films where the focus was on them in the last few years.

So, here is the actors who has delivered most comprehensively in the last few years, starting 2014, at the BO.

Starting from her first major hit Queen, Kangana has worked in seven films and given three hits - Tanu Weds Manu Returns and Queen. Deepika, on the other hand, has worked in five films and three of these were major box office hits. Deepika has not had a Hindi film release for past two years, since Bajirao Mastani. However, her first Hollywood project, xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, opposite Vin Diesel emerged as one of the big worldwide hits this year.

Priyanka Chopra also had only Jai Gangaajal as her Bollywood release in almost two years. She is a de factor international star today with her ABC series Quantico and Hollywood debut Baywatch. She is at present acting in two more Hollywood projects. She is yet to announce her next Bollywood film.

However, none of the international projects have been included in the data, keeping the focus completely on actresses and their films’ Bollywood box office earnings.

Priyanka Chopra, who was busy with her international projects of late, worked in five films and has one hit to her credit in the time period between 2014 to 2017, which is Gunday. Her Mary Kom was critically acclaimed.

As per the box office figures and number of films, Anushka Sharma is the clear winner here -- she has worked in eight films in past four years and has delivered four major hits with films (Salman Khan-starrer Sultan and PK headlined by Aamir Khan) creating new records at the box office. In the following years, Phillauri and NH 10 were produced by Anushka and had her leading the cast.

Kangana has three National awards and four Filmfare awards to her credit. She is, undoubtedly, a wonderful actor who has given commendable performances in films like Queen and Tanu Weds Manu but let us not completely forget films like Revolver Rani and I Love NY.

If Hansal Mehta’s Simran fails to impress the audience and rake in profits, it will be a major dip in Kangana’s career as she already has three flops in a row. For the love of the fierce woman that she is and the wonderful performer we saw in Queen, Fashion and Tanu Weds Manu films, we hope audience gets another superlative performance in the film.
