Kirron Kher refuses mom roles

Actor tired of playing same character on screen, says she’ll concentrate on social activism now instead of acting.

After Mummy Punjabi released last week, Kirron Kher says she won’t play a mother on screen anymore. She says, “I will only sign films that offer interesting characters. Doing a movie just for the heck of it doesn’t appeal to me anymore.”

The actor recently appeared along with her parents in Pammy Somal’s film. She says, “The director wanted my parents to appear in one of the scenes of the film. Since we were shooting in Chandigarh, they didn’t mind. I am not upset with the marketing. We were waiting to release it for a long time, but the film’s got a good response and is getting a good offer for satellite rights.”

The actor says, for now, she’s happy judging India’s Got Talent on television and promoting social activism through her role in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Consciously staying away from films last year, she says, “There are so many more things I am involved in and needed to prioritise. Social activisim is more up my alley than doing slotted roles. As of now, I have no plans to enter politics, but who knows…”

Kirron returned to acting 14 years after her son Sikander was born. She bagged meaty roles in Sardari Begum and Devdas, after the play Saalgirah with husband Anupam Kher. “We travelled all over the world for six years with that play. But I don’t think I will do plays either for a while. I am open to non-fiction television shows for now. Daily soaps are too time-consuming, so I have turned down a couple of offers.”
