Newcomer Amit Purohit, who stars in Shobhna’s Seven Nights, loosely based on Shobha De’s life, talks about the film, working with Raveena Tandon and his upcoming projects.

Amit Purohit, who won accolades for his performance in Sudipto Chattopadhyay’s Pankh (2010), has now been seen romancing Raveena Tandon in Mumbai locales.

“Raveena is very professional and makes every actor feel at ease,” says Purohit. The film stars Anupam Kher and Rohit Roy, also essaying parts for other men in Shobhna’s (played by Raveena) life.

Raveena plays an author whose initial characterisation (the name also rings a bell) is that of the city’s well-known journalist, columnist and author, Shobha De. The film captures the city’s nightlife as well as offers an insight into the underbelly of the film industry and the glitzy world of socialites.

For now, Amit has just finished shooting a film called Aalaap, where he heads a music band that plays to enforce change in the society.

Thirty-five years ago, in 1977, Amitabh Bachchan had played the lead role in another film titled, Alaap, so on the film’s sets, the crewmembers started addressing Purohit as Amitji.

About his celebrated namesake, the newcomer says, “There is only one Amitji.” He adds that he is merely starting his career in Bollywood and has a long way before he reaches superstardom.

His performance in the arthouse film Bijuka, directed by Ashter Sayed, has also been appreciated at festivals worldwide.

“As an actor, it is easy to get overawed with offers of all kinds. I have been lucky enough to get every kind of role. I just want to be at the right place at the right time when it comes to being offered films,” says Purohit.

Besides acting, Purohit is also a Ranji Trophy cricket player who has represented Madhya Pradesh. However, at the moment, the young one is batting for Bollywood. “Cinema is my only focus for now,” he says.

He adds, “My father is a writer and he has been proud of my work till date. I need to keep working and make him proud,” he smiles.

The actor has earlier shared screen space with Katrina Kaif when he was modelling, and even kissed a guy in his debut film, Pankh.

“My big moment will come when I work with the best actors,” he says confidently.
