He might be veteran actor Pankaj Kapur’s son, but Shahid Kapoor doesn’t compare his acting journey to that of other star kids’. He says that his approach and reaction to success were like an outsider’s.

"I was a middle class kid, who never stayed with his father. I lived with my mom (in Delhi). My parents separated when I was very young," says Shahid, while sharing that he did spend time with his father, but didn’t grow up in the industry. "It was a dream (becoming an actor). A lot of boys I see today [in Bollywood], are from within and around the industry. People feel the same about me, but I am not like them. I wasn’t even in Mumbai for the first 10-12 years of my life," he says.







The actor reveals that when he came to Mumbai, no one knew he was Pankaj’s son. "Mine was a complicated childhood. Who’s going to sit and explain what happened? I never took my dad’s name when I went for auditions. I wanted to make it on my own. I remember when I got my first signing amount of Rs 5 lakh, I was ecstatic," he says.

Talking about other star kids, he adds, "They arefortunate because they have seen so much happen around them. They have so much exposure that they are more stable." He admits that he did let success go to his head for a while, but says he’s wiser now. "The journey has its own value. You become your own person, and learn from your mistakes. I have learnt a lot," he adds.
