A big budget film, and an even bigger co-star. Actor Sonakshi Sinha, who marked her debut in Bollywood with Dabangg yesterday, has had a launch most actors can only dream off. However, going by past examples such as Zarine Khan, Asin and Harman Baweja — all of whom launched with big budget and over-hyped Bollywood films — it remains to be seen if Sonakshi can fair any better.

“A big launch helps them make a mark, but what’s important is how they follow it up and where they go after a big release with a big star. No matter how big the launch, you’re still a beginner with limited choices,” says film critic Anupama Chopra.

“It’s always important for a debutante to have a big film, as the branding brings publicity from various other channels. Take Zarine — people remember her today only because of her launch,” said Anil Sharma, filmmaker.

Actor Harman Baweja debuted in 2008 with Love Story 2050, which co-starred actor Priyanka Chopra. Both of Harman’s films since — What’s Your Rashee and Victory — have been flops. And, the only film he has in hands is It’s My Life, which co-stars Genelia D’Souza and Nana Patekar.

Same is the case with Zarine Khan, who debuted with the flop film, Veer, co-starring Salman Khan, earlier this year. She has had no films since and currently has nothing in hand either. Neither does Sonakshi’s brother, Luv Sinha, who debuted in Sadiyan in 2010. Even Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi actor Anushka Sharma has only film in hand — Band Baaja Baraat — and that, too, is a part of her three-film contract with Yash Raj Films.

However, experts are more optimistic about Sonakshi’s future. “Debuting with a big film is always best, but your career graph depends on the choices that you make and how you handle them. Without going into comparisons, Sonakshi is here to stay as she looks fresh and confident and most importantly delivers the right expression,” concludes trade analyst Taran Adarsh.
