The Maharashtra government has extended the parole of actor Sanjay Dutt by another 30 days on grounds of his wife Manyata’s ill health.
Dutt can now stay with his family till February 21.
The actor, who was released on parole from Yerwada prison on December 21 on the same grounds, had applied for extension on February 16.
He is serving a five-year jail term for possessing illegal firearms brought into the country by conspirators of the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts.
After the Supreme Court upheld his conviction, he returned to jail in May last year to serve three-and-a-half years of the sentence because he had already served 18 months. He had been out on bail since November 2007.
Additional divisional commissioner TG Pawar told HT on Monday Dutt’s parole was approved after considering a police report.
Pawar said extension of parole was procedural, but the report of local police, where the convicted resided, was mandatory.
Pawar said a person could seek 90 days parole as per jail manual and Dutt could avail of his 30-day parole in future also.
Dutt’s parole application in November last had created a big controversy. The application stated his wife’s illness as the reason, but Manyata’s photographs at a party surfaced in the media. This had forced the Maharashtra government to postpone its decision.
According to an official source, Bandra police stated in their report that Manyata was operated on January 8 and was likely to undergo another operation.
She was diagnosed with a tumour in the liver and a suspected heart ailment. The police have attached a detailed medical report on Manyata’s health condition, the source said.
