Sonakshi Sinha is gearing up to break some age-old rules this Janmashtami.
For her first item song in actor-producer Akshay Kumar and TV head honcho-turned-producer Ashwini Yardi’s co-production, Oh My God, she climbed up a human pyramid and broke the dahi handi, an act performed across the country mainly by boys to commemorate Lord Krishna’s birth. Even the pyramid Sonakshi climbed was made by a group of girl govindas.
The actor, dressed in a costume designed by herself, rehearsed for the song at a dance studio. She also spent hours working out to build stamina to be able to run and climb the human tiers. She took pains even beyond the gym — we learnt that Sonakshi sprained her leg while shooting the sequence. Nonetheless, she completed it on schedule.
Co-producer Ashwini is elated with her commitment. “I’m sure after watching how gracefully Sonakshi climbs the pyramid and breaks the dahi handi, there will be many more girls across the country who will step out in groups this year to do the same,” she says.
When asked how the idea of girls breaking the dahi handi came about, Ashwini says, “It’s the best thing that we could have done to package the song and make an impact. Prabhudheva designed some high-energy dance moves for Sonakshi. And it would have looked odd that after that, she watches a boy break the handi. She was extremely excited at the idea and worked out harder than usual.”
We wonder if they considered using a body double for it. Ashwini says, “No. It would have watered down the effect. Sonakshi wanted to perform it herself. And that’s commendable because it’s very taxing on the body.”
