She shot to fame with the song, Baby doll (Ragini MMS 2; 2014), which became an instant chartbuster. Then, Kanika Kapoor went on to sing hits like Lovely and Kamlee from Happy New Year (2014), Chittiyaan kalaiyaan (Roy; 2015), Chhil gaye naina (NH10; 2015) and Desi look (Ek Paheli Leela; 2015).
In a Bollywood career spanning around two years, the singer has got the opportunity to perform before the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, and the UK Prime Minister, David Cameron.
Now, we have come to know that Kanika travelled from Mumbai to Pakistan recently, to perform at an event that aimed to propagate peace between the two nations. She sang in Islamabad, along with some Pakistani musicians. Interestingly, at the show, she also wore an outfit made by a local designer. “People in Islamabad love music. It was great to perform there. I would love to visit the city again,” says Kanika, who visited the neighbouring country for the first time.
The singer says she didn’t anticipate success so early in her career. “It has been a rewarding experience. I consider it (my growth as an artiste) a big achievement,” says Kanika, who has always had a successful musical association with composers Meet Bros. “They are extremely talented composers. We share a great camaraderie, and understand each other well as far as the music sensibilities are concerned,” she adds.
Kanika is especially known for singing eccentric numbers. Ask her if she is only comfortable singing uptempo songs, and she says, “I’ve just started my musical journey. Since my first song became a huge hit, I was offered songs that fell under similar genres. That worked for me and also for music lovers. But, I want to make a mark as a versatile singer.”
