A Penguin pop-up bookstore in East London will mark the International Women’s Day by selling only books written by women writers.
The pop-up bookshop Like A Woman, launched in partnership with book retailer Waterstones, will be operational from March 5 to 9 on Rivington Street in Shoreditch, London. It will stock books by over 200 writers, and “celebrate the persistence of women who’ve fought for change: those who fight, rebel and shout #LikeAWoman,” according to a report in The Guardian.
According to The Bookseller, Like a Woman will also host events and workshops by authors such as Booker Prize-shortlisted Deborah Levy and food writer, Melissa Hemsley. The money raised from ticket sales will be donated to Solace Women’s Aid, a charity for survivors of domestic violence in London.
The store will have books by a variety of authors, including Simone de Beauvoir, Anne Frank, Elif Shafak, Mary Wollstonecraft and Virginia Woolf. It will not stock the titles in the traditional bookstore format but according to the “impact the author has had on culture, history or society”. For instance, “Women to watch”, “Your body”, “Essential feminist reads” and so on.
