BENGALURU: Cab ride aggregator Ola on Tuesday announced the launch of ‘Ola Offline’ across the four metros in the country to help customers book rides without internet using text messages.

The move is to recover any business that might be lost due to poor or no internet connection. The feature will be rolled out across the 121 locations that Ola operates in the coming weeks, Ola said.

In the absence of data connectivity, Ola app will automatically allow users to book rides using text messages.

Ola said it has been piloting the feature in smaller towns and cities such as Indore and Nagpur since June this year. “The need for access to mobility even in the absence of internet, has paved way to the launch of this innovative feature. Starting with the four metro cities, Ola plans to roll out the feature in rest of the cities, over the coming weeks,” Ola said in a statement.

Ola said that although over 460 million people in the country have access to internet, it still only accounts for 34% of the population. “In India, users are more inclined towards prepaid mobile service, making them more vulnerable to running out of data. Spotty 3G and 4G coverage also account for a fair amount of data connectivity issues, even in tier 1 cities.”
