Trai to issue notice to telcos over call drops
NEW DELHI: As row between incumbents, including Airtel, Idea and Vodafone, and new entrant Reliance Jio escalated, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) on Monday stepped in and said it will slap show cause notices on operators for call drops that are far exceeding the norm. With Jio charging incumbent operators of providing far fewer points of interconnect (PoIs) than needed for its users to complete calls on rival networks, Trai chairman RS Sharma said the regulator has reviewed data and it will issue show-cause notices. “We have received the data. It shows call failure level is far far in excess of prescribed limit under quality of service (QoS) rules. Prima Facie this constitutes to non compliance of licence condition related to interconnection and QoS norms on congestion levels at PoIs,” he added. Meanwhile, Reliance Jio on Monday made live the data on call drops its users are experiencing due to Airtel, Vodafone and Idea not providing enough interconnectivity. The Mukesh Ambani-led firm added a link on its website detailing call drops experienced during a 24-hour duration.
