The star of the tablet world seems to be facing tougher competition lately, especially from its increasingly popular Android rivals. Gartner predicts that Android devices could account for up to 42 percent of tablet sales in 2014, compared to 22 percent in 2012, taking a sizeable bite of Apple's market share.

Nonetheless, Apple can pride itself on the sales of 31.2 million iPhones, representing a 20 percent increase year on year and a record high for the period. Mac sales, on the other hand, were down by 5 percent, with 3.8 million computers sold over the three-month period.
