The government plans to put in place a mechanism to bring down aggregate technical and commercial (AT&C) losses, generally referred to as transmission and distribution losses, to 15 per cent by 2012 from 35 per cent at present, Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said at the India Electricity 2007 conference.
"The government intends to do so through a new scheme where these losses would be monitored with the help of information technology and would ascertain how much of power transmitted is received by the end user," Shinde said.
The Planning Commission has estimated that improvements in the distribution sector that are necessary for reducing AT&C losses may require investments of up to Rs 1 lakh crore, Shinde said.
