The new airport terminal is one of the most ambitious projects undertaken by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for which a new company —Chandigarh International Airport Ltd (CIAL) — has been formed with its stakeholders being the Punjab and Haryana governments apart from AAI.

A senior general manager level-official from AAI has been posted to oversee the construction, which would be on the lines of Delhi and Mumbai airports, sources said. Sources said five companies had been shortlisted out of which L&T’s bid was the lowest. A formal announcement would be made after the AAI board gives its approval.

The construction is expected to be completed by November 2014. Passenger traffic at Chandigarh is set to rise from 800,000 annually to 1.5 million by 2014 and around 26 aircraft could be parked.
