The benchmark Sensex tanked by over 316 points and slipped below the 19K mark on Bombay Stock Exchange on Thursday due to heavy selling by funds in blue-chip stocks following the global trend.
The BSE-30 share index, Sensex, dropped by 316.41 points at 18,973.42 in the first five minutes of trade.
Similarly, the wide-based National Stock Exchange's Nifty dipped by 135.60 points to 5,646.75 following a sharp fall in index-related stocks like Reliance Industries, Infosys, ITC, and Larsen and Toubro.
The Hong Kong share market tumbled by 3.2 per cent on opening on Thursday, dragged down by Wall Street's overnight fall amid worries over the credit crisis, a weak dollar and high crude prices.
