To phase out 15-year-old govt vehicles, Gadkari shares details with states

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has said that all government vehicles - that have completed 15 years - will be scrapped and a policy to this effect has been sent to states.

Addressing an event in Nagpur on Saturday, Gadkari said, “Yesterday, I signed a file under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi that all the vehicles of the Indian government which have completed 15 years will be scrapped. I have sent this policy of the Indian government to all the states. They should adopt this policy at the state level,” news agency PTI quoted him as saying.

On September 14, Nitin Gadkari announced plans of having at least three registered vehicle scrapping facilities in every district of the country. The vehicle scrappage policy came into effect in April this year.

In August 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while launching the policy, said it would help phase out unfit and polluting vehicles and also promote a circular economy. The policy provides for fitness tests after 20 years for personal vehicles, while commercial vehicles will require it after the completion of 15 years.

In case of failure to obtain fitness certification or found unfit, the vehicles will be de-registered.

The Union government had said under the policy, states and Union Territories (UTs) would provide up to 25% tax rebate on road tax for vehicles that are purchased after scrapping old vehicles.
