A court here on Friday sentenced three former engineering students for the January 2010 murder of two of their then juniors. The prosecution said Gurjeet Singh of Nabha, Baljinder Singh of Hamirgarh (Sangrur) and Pritpal Singh of Mansa, third-year engineering students at the time of the crime, had killed their juniors for money and gadgets that could help feed their drug addiction.
The victims were Madhup Kumar Jha, a resident of Bathinda, and Amit Kumar Sharma of Ludhiana, both students of second year, juniors of their killers at Baba Hira Singh Bhattal Institute of Engineering and Technology in Lehragaga, about 40km from here.
After the police fished out bodies of the two boys on January 9, 2010, from a canal near here after families reported them missing, the investigation revealed that on January 2, they and their three seniors, all in their early 20s, had left for Madhup's Bathinda residence in a car owned by one of the seniors.
The seniors gave sedatives in cold drinks to Madhup and Amit on the way, and then threw them in the Kotla branch canal near Harigarh on the Sangrur-Barnala road after taking away their laptops, mobile phones and money.
The victims' parents informed the police on January 4, 2010, about their sons gone missing, and the three seniors were nabbed after the bodies were recovered. During interrogation, they confessed to the crime, and said they needed the money to buy contrabands.
The post-mortem reports of the victims said they were given some poisonous substance but died of drowning.
All three convicts - lodged in the district jail - have also been fined Rs 5,000 each by Barnala additional district and sessions judge BS Sandhu.
'Nothing can bring back our son'
Ludhiana: As a Barnala court on Friday awarded life imprisonment to three youths for having killed their juniors in 2010, parents of one of the victims, Amit Sharma of Zeenat Nagar in Haibowal, could not hold back tears. "The vacuum created by my son's death can't be filled with anything.
But the punishment should have been more severe," said Veermati, Amit's mother.
Amit and his classmate Madhup Kumar Jha were murdered on January 2, 2010, for their laptops, other gadgets and money. "We had gifted Amit a laptop, but never thought that it could be the reason for his death. He was very happy with the laptop and had promised us that he would grab the top position in exams," said Veermati.
Amit's father Satya Narayan Sharma, a lab superintendent with the railways, recalled that Amit was very focused about his career. "He was eager to work with a multinational company as an engineer. We all had grand plans for him, but it was not to be. The killers have been punished, but nothing in the world can bring back my son."
