The Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana on Wednesday suspended the licence of a lawyer practising in the district courts, Kaithal, after his alleged involvement in extorting money.

The council had taken a suo motu cognizance of the sex racket busted by the Kaithal police, through which lawyer Jai Prakash had allegedly extorted Rs 8 lakh from three reputed families.

The decision was taken by a committee comprising Rakesh Gupta, chairman; Rajat Gautam, vice-chairman; and Bhupinder Singh Rathore, chairman of the trustee committee of the Bar Council.

The committee suspended the licence of Jai Prakash with immediate effect for “misusing his professional responsibility and indulging in anti-social activities”.
