Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders on Thursday resorted to "jail-bharo" movement in colony number 5, claiming that the allotment of flats to slum dwellers by the Congress government was a "cruel joke".
BJP leader and former union minister Harmohan Dhawan, along with hundreds of party workers under the banner of "Ekta Samiti", addressed a rally in the area and later resorted to "jail bharo". They were taken by the police to the Sector-34 police station and later freed.
Dhawan said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would be shown black flags during his visit on September 14. He claimed that the tenements should be given ownership rights and instead of single-room sets they be given two-room flats.
The BJP leader said as per the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) terms and conditions, those being allotted tenements were to pay a monthly amount for the next 20 years. Thereafter, they were supposed to return the houses, which was not correct.
Dhawan also demanded that the rooms to be allotted should have kitchen or storeroom.
He further said when a person's name was in the biometric survey of 2006 there was no need of the condition of the same name in the voter's list of the same year.
