We all love listening to them, their songs make or break our parties, and some of us — aspiring to be a part of the industry — even look up to them. But, that doesn’t keep some of our beloved Punjabi singers from being engulfed in controversy. Singh:Ever since 2013 dawned upon us, Honey Singh had been under the scanner for lyrics of songs such as ‘Main Hoon Balatkari’. An FIR was registered on the complaint of Nawanshahr-based non-government organisation, Human Empowerment League of Punjab (HELP), at Nawanshahr city police station under Section 294 (obscene acts and songs to the annoyance of others in public place) of the Indian Penal Code on May 15, 2013. Mehndi:
Famous Punjabi pop singer Daler Mehndi, who had made a name for himself in Bollywood as a playback singer, has been in the news for the wrong reasons since 2003. The singer has been accused in a trafficking case. According to the case registered by Patiala Police, Daler’s brother Shamsher and others alleged that Daler had taken money from them to the tune of Rs 1 crore on the pretext of taking them abroad. The complainants, however, alleged that the deal never matured and the accused also failed to return the money. Daler Mehndi was arrested for the same and later released on bail. The last hearing pertaining to the case was held in November 2013. Gill:On June 13, Punjabi singer Nachchatar Gill was booked for rape by Ludhiana Police. A case under Sections 376, 420, 506, and 66 E and 67 A of Information Technology Act was registered against him after a model accused him of sexual exploitation. Towards the end of December 2013, the singer was arrested and locked up in jail.

The complainant, who is a local model, had alleged that Gill raped her on the pretext of giving her a break as a model in his music videos. Gill was also charged with making the model’s MMS, after giving her a drink laced with sedatives at a hotel. Brar:
Punjabi singer Preet Brar, who is known for his Punjabi duets, is not one to have a clean image. Also a real estate agent, Brar is facing two cheating cases in Kharar and SAS Nagar. The case registered at SAS Nagar was of cheating and forgery for allegedly selling the same plot to two people. In September 2013, Brar was arrested by the Mumbai Police when he was trying to flee the country and was later brought to SAS Nagar by the police. Preet had allegedly committed a fraud of Rs 51 lakh. Makhan:
Punjabi singer KS Makhan has a case registered against him under NDPS Act for allegedly smuggling heroin to Canada, where he was staying in 2006. Makhan and two other Canadian citizens — Lakhwinder Singh Lakha and Raja Boparai — were originally charged with receiving heroin from Makhan’s brother Hardeep Singh, a resident of Shankar village, Jalandhar, in 2006.

It was alleged that Makhan, Boparai and Lakha used to send money through the hawala route (a system using underground banks) to Hardeep to purchase drugs from smugglers in Jalandhar, Nakodar and Ludhiana in Punjab. The drugs were then shipped back to Canada.
