Representatives of the 141 khap panchayats of north India on Thursday issued an ultimatum of three months to the Haryana government to grant reservation to the Jat community in government jobs under the other backward class (OBC) category.
Gathered under the banner of Sarvkhap Jat Mahapanchyat at Dinoda village in Jind district, members of the Jat community passed a resolution unanimously that if the state government failed to fulfill their demand, their agitation might turn violent.
Jat organisations, including the All India Jat Arakshan Sangharsh Samiti (both the Sangwan and Yashpal Malik faction), Jat Arakshan Samiti and Jat Mahasabha, accepted the leadership of khap panchayats and announced to go by the decisions of the mahapanchayat on the reservation issue.
The mahapanchayat started with paying tributes to three persons of the Jat community who died during agitation in 2011.
During the next three months, Jats would not sit silent, but monitor the state government's move regarding their demand.
Binan khap president Nafe Singh Nain, who presided over the mahapanchyat, said: "The state government should not test the patience of the Jat community."
He cited economic backwardness of the community members to press for reservation in the government jobs.
"Youths belonging to the Jat community are lagging behind as most of them are unemployed."
The mahapanchyat passed a resolution demanding that members of the Jat community be appointed as judges in the Supreme Court and the high courts.
All India Jat Arakshan Sangharsh Samiti president Dharmpal Chhot said, "The state government should not think that the agitation will end on its own. We will keep the flame of hope burning till our demand is not met."
