Former Congress MLA Sukhpal Khaira, who had resigned as the party’s Punjab unit spokesman on Sunday, continues to send statements on behalf of the party on key political issues.

When asked to clear the air on his current position in the Congress, Khaira said his resignation had not been accepted so far and, thus, he could be considered as the party spokesman.

The ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Thursday said, “Khaira has been rejected by his own party, which has made him resign from the sole responsibility of a spokesperson. Khaira is treated as a pariah in his party.”

SAD leaders Dr Daljeet Singh Cheema and Maheshinder Singh Grewal said in a joint statement here that Khaira was not what he portrayed himself to be. Countering Khaira’s charges against cabinet minister Bikram Singh Majithia, the SAD leaders dubbed the former Congress MLA as the man “behind the liquor and drug mafia in his area.”
