The residents of sector 44 woke up to the sound of gunshots. And, the victim turned out to be the son of an ex-cop, who, after trying to kill his estranged wife, shot himself through the head. The, wife, however, survived with minor injuries, as the bullet missed her and hit a tree.

The incident occurred near government school in sector 44 at about 8 am. The victims have been identified as Simon Masih and his wife Anita, who is a schoolteacher. After preliminary investigations, sector 34 station house officer Kirpal Singh said Anita was a divorcee with a child and she wasn't aware of Masih's first marriage. While Anita has a daughter from her first marriage, Masih has a son from his first wife Meenu.
Police said trouble started brewing between the couple when Anita found out that Masih was still living with his first wife in Baltana. It was his refusal to leave his first wife that became a bone of contention between the two. Anita had filed a complaint against Masih with the Chandigarh women cell a few months back and since then, she had been living with her parents.
The SHO said Anita's complaint to the women cell irked Masih, who kept asking her to withdraw the complaint and her refusal ended in arguments between the two. This morning, Anita and her 14-year-old daughter were on their way to their Baptist Shool in Sector 44 on a scooter when Masih chased them in his Swift car. As Masih caught up with Anita, he fired at her from a country-made pistol but the bullet grazed her shoulder before hitting a tree.
As a result of the firing, the mother-daughter duo fell on the road. They were rushed to Government Medical College and Hospital, sector 32 and are under treatment. Considering her dead, Masih rolled up the car windows and shot himself through the head. The police are trying to ascertain the source of the country-made pistol used by Masih to end his life.
The police booked Masih for attempt to murder and suicide besides sections 25, 54 and 59 of Arms Act.
It all happened within minutes
The incident took place just a few meters away from Anita's parents' house within minutes of Anita and her daughter leaving the house. Hearing the wails and shrieks, the residents rushed to the spot to find blood splattered Swift car (CH-04-F-1441).
The bullet had pierced through the roof of the car and Masih lay dead. The body has been kept at the mortuary of Government Multi Specialty Hospital, sector 16. The cops recovered .315 bore country-made pistol from the car and impounded the vehicle.
