Area councillor Pardeep Chhabra, who took up the issue with the MC commissioner and mayor, has submitted a fresh proposal in this regard.

He said: “We have asked the authorities to charge Rs 5 for four hours and subsequently Rs 5 per hour for four-wheelers, including taxis, and Rs 2 per entry up to four hours for two-wheelers and subsequently Rs 2 per hour.”

He said that ever since the district courts were shifted and Elante mall came up at phase-1, industrial area, Chandigarh, it has been observed that large parking space was lying vacant even during peak hours in almost all parking areas of Sector 17, so it was not justified to increase the parking fee in the larger interest of traders and customers.

In the finance and contract committee (F&CC) meeting held on May 21, it was decided that Rs 5 per entry would be charged for two hours and subsequently Rs 10 per hour, and Rs 2 per entry up to two hours subsequently Rs 4 per hour for two-wheelers.

Following the new parking rates, traders were up in arms and had met MC commissioner Vivek Pratap Singh and mayor Subhash Chawla and held several meetings with Chhabra.
