The flying squad-1 of Vigilance Bureau (VB) arrested a head constable, posted in the Economic Offences (EO) wing, at SAS Nagar for accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a Kharar resident on Tuesday night. The accused, identified as Harminder Singh, was produced in court on Thursday, and sent to judicial custody.

The accused, identified as Harminder Singh, was produced in court on Thursday, and sent to judicial custody.
Superintendent of police (vigilance) Hargobind Singh said a bank employee, Gaganjot Singh, had complained that the constable had asked for Rs 50,000 from him to settle a financial dispute in his favour. The bribe amount was finally settled at Rs 25,000 and the first installment of Rs 10,000 was to be given on Tuesday.
A trap was laid and Harminder was caught red-handed while accepting Rs 10,000 from Gaganjot near Franco Hotel, Phase 1.
Why was bribe sought
In his complaint to the vigilance department, Gaganjot Singh said Amritpal Singh lodged a complaint against him, which was referred to the EO wing. Accused Harminder Singh started demanding money from Gaganjot from the first day of the case, being the investigating officer. A case under Sections 7 and 13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act has been lodged.

February: The vigilance bureau held assistant sub-inspector Jarnail Singh while accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh at Kurali in SAS Nagar for settling a case.
August 19: The manager of Primary Cooperative Agriculture Development Bank (PCADB) was nabbed while accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from a farmer.
August 31: A block level mining officer was nabbed while taking Rs 50,000 bribe.
